Abstract Background: Because heavy metals are increasingly found in microbial habitats due to natural and industrial processes, microbes have evolved several mechanisms to tolerate the presence of heavy metals. The extensive application of heavy metals in industrial processes lead to highly contaminated areas worldwide. Several studies focused in the use of actinobacteria for cleaning up the environment were performed in the last 15 years. New processes based on microorganism technology have provided an alternative or complementary way to conventional metal deposition/recovery techniques. Thus, the application of these new processes could be more economical. Method: In this review, we compiled and discussed works focused in the study of different bioremediation strategies using actinobacteria and how they contributed to the improvement of the already existing strategies. conclusion: From our analysis, it appears that the capacities of actinobacteria to remove heavy metals from contaminated areas can play very significant role in the bioremediation.
