ABSTRACT Background: Many efforts are put forward towards harnessing the demand for developing well-organized models for learning object via the use of technological resources. The modeling of learning object is a mechanism used to formalize the flow of activities, roles and actors that are needed for its structuration. It is a laborious task aimed to produce high quality educational materials for teaching and learning. Objectives: As a result, several learning object modeling techniques have been specifically developed to provide fundamental activities in relation to the development of the learning materials. Methods: However, the structure of the techniques and the composite nature of the learning object are still open to interpretations and discussions due to the limited availability of the models. Results: The present study discusses certain modeling methods designed for managing learning object in the educational arena. A number of modeling approaches were intensively reviewed to depict the processes in handling learning object and its modeling. Conclusions: The study provides a comparative analysis for learning object, to advance the understanding of its structuration, modeling and composite nature.
